Sandy Heath finches

Part of the flock at Sandy Heath this lunchtime - Greenfinch, Goldfinch and Chaffinch only as far as I could see. I think there are about 450 birds in this photo which means there are probably around 600 birds in this flock. My estimates of numbers here were somewhat of an underestimate.

Mobile phone digiscoping!

OK, so its worse than usual, but I thought it was quite atmospheric with the female Pintail and a Heron overhead...

Spotted Crake

Another superb find by John Lynch - an adult Spotted Crake, present on the wader scrape at Dunstable STW from 8th-24th September.

Spotted Crake

More often it was skittish and elusive - not easy to see or photograph ! The above shot was taken on the 15th Sept during a typical 10 second showing !

This was the 3rd record at DSTW:
One present 11th-13th August, 1975; [The Birds of Bedfordshire (Trodd/Kramer)]
One well watched bird 12th-19th August, 1995 (Paul Trodd et al); [The Bedfordshire Naturalist 1995, 50 (part 2)]

Marsh Harrier

Three raptors watched drifting slowly over Lt. Billington, they were travelling together and at times engaged in gentle sparring . The birds Marsh Harrier, Red Kite and Common Buzzard all appeared to be juveniles.  2/10/08
