Green Woodpecker Southill

I was out and about this morning and ended up in Southill Village on route to Broom, I stopped by the playing fields at the south end of the Village and had some great views of the local Green Woodpecker.

I returned later with Jim P to the same spot and in the space of 1/2 -3/4 of an hour we had Song Thrush, Mistle Thrush, Blackbird, Fieldfare & Redwing all in the playing fields at the same time as well as the Green Woodpecker, Grey Wagtail, and a small flock of finches containing Gold, Green, Siskin & Redpoll? We also had close fly by views of Red Kite and Buzzard . All in all a very pleasant and fruitful visit.

Happy New Year everyone, good birding to all in 2017.

Waxwings Everton Nr Sandy 28-12-2016

Finally the Waxwings find their way to Bedfordshire and stick around long enough to be photographed. There were 4 number in Everton late morning early afternoon showing very well and not at all bothered by us humans, they were at the first houses on the left just as you enter Everton from the Sandy direction.
Hopefully they will stay local for a few days so we can all get to see them close up, it's been 4 years since I got to see them in Beds in 2012?

Fieldfare

Not a Dusky but a better looking thrush in my opinion unless I find a Dusky in Bedfordshire that is...

Grey Phalarope Broom

I made a brief visit early doors to Peacock Lake Broom this morning hoping to bump into the reported Grey Phalarope and was lucky enough along with many other Beds Birders to have some amazing close up views of this fabulous bird.

It wasn't at all bothered by the bank full of birders and photographers and just went about its business right in front of us. Looking at the photo's there seems to be something wrong with its left eye unfortunately.

Happy days:-)

Great White Egret Dunstable Sewage Works

A Great White Egret turned up at the Sewage Treatment Works today found by John (the lucky) Lynch with about 15-16 Little Egrets and luckily stayed on site long enough for me to get some record shots in the fading light after work at about 17.15 ish. Hopefully it will stay a while and we will be able to get some better views and photo's tomorrow in some decent daylight.

Please note unfortunately the sewage works is only accessible to Permit Holders or their guests.

GWE Still on site today 30-10-2016, so I have added a few more pictures. Hopefully it will stay on site for a while, if so we have an open morning next Sunday 6th 09.00 - 12.00 for anyone who would like to pop along to see this lovely bird.
