I finally after many attempts over the past few weeks got to see and photograph the pair of long staying Great Northern Divers at Stewartby, luckily they were also quite close to shore :-)

Goldcrest

I had a trip around Bedfordshire today looking for the Great Northern Diver at Stewartby, Firecrest at Meadow Lane, Great White Egret at Willington, & Dartford Warbler in Aspley Heath. I completely failed on all 4 counts not a sign when I was about, but all were reported later in the day so they are still about.

Never mind I can console myself with some very close views of a Goldcrest at Aspley Heath and some Long-tailed Tits at Stewartby so it wasn't a complete bomb out on the photographic front.

Slavonian Grebe

Slavonian Grebe at Stewartby Lake
I had the same idea as Andy and tried my luck again this afternoon.  It will look amazing in a few weeks time. Slavonian Grebe, Stewartby Lake, 14th April 2012

Stewartby Slav Sat 14th April

The Slavonian Grebe was present relatively close to the shore near the eastern corner of Stewartby Lake for its third day. With some decent light and the sun behind, it seemed a shame not to try a little digiscoping.

Two Great Northern Divers - Stewartby Lake

A short video clip of the two Great Northern Divers on Stewartby Lake. Taken using a Canon S95 compact camera attached to a Nikon ED50 (27x) scope via an adaptor. The birds were at a distance of about 500 yards and I was using approx 9x zoom on the camera.

Common Sandpiper & Magpie - Stewartby Lake

Another photo of the Common Sandpiper taken on the sailing club bank of Stewartby Lake. in slightly better light than I had for the last photos. I just wish it had walked past the car a few minutes earlier when the light was much better as it was for the Magpie. Photos by Martin Green.
